Abolish the DOE

Under government guidelines, our children fail to read and understand math proficiently.

On February 8, 2021, Representative Thomas Massie, a congressman serving Kentucky, introduced a bill to abolish the Department of Education. H.R. 899 states: “The Department of Education shall terminate on December 31, 2022.” Short and sweet, it is exactly what a government’s bill should be- to the point and understandable. Enough with countless pages that nobody will ever read or understand.

More importantly, it represents what education should be: back in the hands of the people. The people who are closest to students can best meet their needs. Parents know their children best, and have the right and responsibility of deciding what type of education is best, be that homeschool, charter school, private school, government school, and more. Truly, the possibilities are endless, and only limited by government overreach. Teachers should not be pressured to teach to the test, and schools should not focus on standardized testing. Education is not one size fits all!

In 1981, one year after the Department of Education was established, President Ronald Reagan proposed to dismantle it. Instead, it has grown to a large but failing organization. Under government guidelines, our children fail to read and understand math proficiently. They are exposed to inappropriate sexual content and radical agendas. National standards fail to accomplish anything positive. Rep. Massie’s proposed bill is a wonderful step in the right direction!
