CALL TO ACTION: Tell Sen. Gruters & Rep. Garrison to Restore Bill Text Critical to Keeping Porn Out of Public School

by | Feb 2, 2022

Overview

Senate Bill SB 1300 and House Bill HB 1467 are companion bills that deal with the subject of preventing harmful content (like porn) from finding its way into public school materials. There are some good aspects of the current versions of SB 1300 and HB 1467, and we (FLCA) could really get behind these two bills if not for a couple of critical proposed revisions in each. We need your voice to tell Sen. Gruters and Rep. Garrison to restore key language in each of these bills to help ensure that our children are not exposed to harmful materials.

ACTION

Use the petition below to contact Sen. Gruters and Rep. Garrison directly, urging them to do the following:

With regards to SB 1300, tell Sen. Gruters to:

  1. Restore the words in SB 1300 lines 186-188 that the bill currently removes: “regarding the prohibition against distributing harmful materials  to minors under s. 847.012 and applicable case law, and best practices for providing students access to”.  FLCA has shared with Sen. Gruters as well as many legislators, Commissioner Corcoran and members of the Governor’s staff the results of our updated assessment of pornography and age-inappropriate  materials used throughout Florida. Unless the Senator believes this proven content is appropriate for children as young as Pre-k and k-12, why would he remove this language?  Here is the updated Porn Report for all 67 counties, including Charlotte and Sarasota counties.
  2. Restore SB 1300 lines 117-119 which the bill currently removes: “Each district school board shall maintain on its website a current list of instructional materials, by grade level, purchased by the district.” This is a simple matter of transparency.

With regards to HB 1467, tell Rep. Garrison to:

  1.  Restore lines 143-145 in HB 1467 which the bill currently removes “Each district school board shall maintain on its website a current list of instructional materials, by grade level, purchased by the district.” Again, this is a simple matter of transparency.
  2. Restore the words in lines 213-215 in HB 1467 and lines 18-20 in Amendment 442037 “regarding the prohibition against distributing harmful materials 19 to minors under s. 847.012 and applicable case law, and best practices for providing students access to”. Again, why would Rep. Garrison remove this language unless he agrees that pornography and age-inappropriate materials are acceptable for children as young as Pre-k and k-12? Here is the updated Porn Report for all 67 counties, including Clay county.

NOTE REGARDING PETITION: Your impact will be greater if you take a few minutes to write your own subject and rewrite some of the email message to be in your own words. Leaders and their staffs tend to pay less attention to emails that are identical copies of what they’ve seen before. But if you take the time to change it (or at least SOME of it), it indicates that you care enough about the issue to spend some time constructing your message.

NOTE: if you submit the petition via a mobile device and receive an “invalid email” message, please make sure you’re manually entering all the petition form fields (not using auto-fill of any kind). If the problem persists, please try again on a computer. We are aware of the mobile device issue and are working to fix it as soon as possible.
