Florida Citizens Alliance’s 2019 Porn in Schools Report exhibited the inappropriate content made available to children in our schools, and news stories often show us that it continues. At this point, the level of inappropriate content our children are exposed to in schools is tragic, but unfortunately not very surprising – that is until this latest news broke. Breck Dumas reports for the Blaze that “Second graders in Greenwich, Connecticut, were shown an animated video that displays the silhouette of a man with a graphic, full erection standing over what has been described as a ‘sad’ girl during a ‘lesson on social and emotional learning.’” No one can help but be shocked by this.

Somehow, educators continue to decide that such content is appropriate for young children. It is not until parents make an outcry that schools listen to them. Thankfully in this case, Superintendent Dr. Toni Jones did respond, saying, “‘Around the midway point in the video there is reference to situations in which children may become afraid, including being afraid of abuse, both physical and sexual. The content at this point in the video was not appropriate for our GPS second grade classrooms.’” While Jones acknowledges the poor judgement in showing children this video, a simple statement of regret is not sufficient; damage has already been done.

To expose our children to sexual content is not an appropriate way to protect them from sexual abuse. Rather than protecting our children, schools are grooming our children through vulgar, unsuitable materials. Parents, are you aware of what your children are being exposed to in school? Parents must speak out against such horrific incidents. And if these matters do occur, keep in mind all of your options. You do not have to let this happen. You and your child have the right to a safe learning environment. If your child has been made uncomfortable in school, advocate for your child with the Hope Scholarship.
