On May 23rd the Attorney General’s Office of Parental Rights and the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) entered into a Memorandum of Agreement on a number of topics which include protecting parental rights when it comes to education and making sure curriculum and materials align to Florida Law amongst other focuses. We appreciate the action being taken by both the Attorney General and the FLDOE and the priority to protecting children in Florida from harm and standing up for Parental Rights.
Florida Citizens Alliance, has been sounding the alarm on many of the topics listed out in the Memorandum of Agreement since 2018, especially in the area of sexual materials and curriculum. A common theme we have seen are school districts finding loopholes around passed laws in Florida. This is why we have proposed legislation including closing the loophole when it comes to the Miller Test. Another intivitve we have supported is providing curriculum transparency to all residents. We also created the first in Florida “Porn In Schools Report” which documented the harmful materials in school media centers.
One such legislative proposal was HB 1539 from 2025, which would have closed the literary value loophole that school districts used to keep books with sexually explicit content on school selves. This legislation passed the House but did not get heard in the Senate after passing the House. We believe this legislation is crucial for the success of this Memorandum of Agreement between the Attorney General’s Office of Parental Rights and the FLDOE.
