This past week a bipartisan coalition in the Florida House passed HB 1 (Social Media Use for Minors) and HB 3 (Age Verification for Online Materials Harmful to Minors), both of which were bills we strongly supported.
HB 1, sponsored by State Representatives Sirois and McFarland, would ban social media use for minors 16 and under. This would be accomplished via age verification.
We have seen a countless amount of children glued to their cell phones and computers.
According to Gallup, the average time spent on social media climbs from FOUR+ hours per day for 13-year-olds to as high as SIX hours per day for 17-year-olds.
HB 3, sponsored by State Representatives Tramont and Overdorf, would require age verification for online materials harmful to minors. Currently, any child can gain access to obscene materials online with little restriction.
We want to first thank everyone that signed our petition.
Additionally, we want to thank the sponsors and Speaker Renner for making HB 1 and HB 3 a priority.
However, this fight is not over. We have not yet seen the State Senate’s counterpart for both of these bills move yet.
With your dedicated support, we need to keep up the pressure to make sure that HB 1 and HB 3 are passed in the Senate and signed into law.
Onward to victory!
